Many of you have been to both shores of Lake Tahoe and you have probably noticed a stark contrast between the two. While both have beautiful beaches and fun things to do the feel is quite different. The North Shore of Lake Tahoe is more laid back and has more of a community feel while the South Shore is more of a party atmosphere where more people come to visit and have fun. Each has a lot to offer, it just depends on what you’re looking for.
The Tough Mudder is one event from the North Shore that you won’t want to miss. Its a team oriented 10 to 12 mile obstacle course designed to test your strength, endurance, and mental toughness. There is no winner of this Mudder of an event, the prize is being able to push yourself and achieve things you may have not thought you would’ve been able to.
Some other great events are The Thunderbird Paddling Fest and The Brew Fest. Firstly the Thunderbird Paddling Fest is a paddle race that offers a 4 mile and 8 mile option. The 8 mile option will take you along the shore line of the beautiful Thunderbird Lodge before rounding the final buoy and heading back to the Start/Finish line at Sand Harbor.
The Brew Fest features over 40 different brews from all over Northern California and Nevada. You have a chance to taste all of these and soak up all of that good beer or cider with the best BBQ Truckee has to offer. There will be live music by “Lost Whiskey Engine” and “Coburn Station” as well as dancing. One of the best parts about this event is that it’s located in the beautiful Truckee Regional Park, so if you want to get away from the crowd for a moment and take in the natural beauty of the area, you can!
These are just a few of the many events that you can go to in the North Shore Area, for a full comprehensive list of upcoming and past events go to: https://www.gotahoenorth.com/events/
Of course with South Shore being the wild child of the Sierras you would expect our events to carry the same connotation. To start we have the infamous SnowGlobe Music Festival each year for three days leading up to New Years Eve. This is a hodge podge of new artists ranging from edm music to rap and hip hop. People from all over come to dance like crazy and ring in the New Year. When going to this event you have a chance to see people in lots of crazy costumes and fun outfits, just remember to stay warm if you go. The show goes on no matter what kind of weather there is and snowpants and jackets are advised.
If you have a taste for something a little more laid back there is the scrumptious Lake Tahoe Restaurant Week and the Annual Oktoberfest at Camp Richardson. Restaurant Week features the best food from a bunch of restaurants around the South Shore. There is a special menu for those partaking in the event and the meals generally consist of an appetizer, salad, entree, and dessert. The prices are kept affordable as well so you can visit as many restaurants at you possible without breaking the bank! As for Oktoberfest at Camp Richardson you won’t be let down by this event if you love beer and bavarian food. One of the best parts of this event is that it is family friendly and has an owner and dog dress up contest. Bring your lederhosen!
All around the lake you will find beautiful beaches to sit back and relax on. Most people around town will tell you that Sand Harbor is the best beach to go to. While I don’t disagree with them this beach can get pretty crowded due to its popularity among tourists and locals alike. This beach has a visitor center, boat ramp, and the Sand Harbor Bar and Grill. Not to mention the Shakespeare Festival every year where you can see Shakespearian plays set to the backdrop of Lake Tahoe.
One of my favorite beaches at the South Shore is the Round Hill Pines Beach. This beach is definitely a little less populated and has great amenities such as Jet Ski and paddle boat rentals. They even host weddings and other events! The beach grill has tons of options for great beach food and you can get a really good Pina Colada to finish your of your day of relaxing next to the crystal blue waters.
All in all both North Shore and South Shore have a lot to offer anyone. It just depends on your mood. I know personally some days I feel like taking a day to get away from everything and take some time to reflect or take a friend out to have a nice peaceful time in North Shore. Other days I want to go to a nightclub and dance until I can’t move. The greatest thing about Tahoe is that there is something here for everyone which makes it such a popular spot for people to visit and a perfect place for people to live. The spirit of Lake Tahoe is freedom. You are free to go hiking, lay on the beach all day, party like crazy, or just go outside your door and see what happens. With everyone being so friendly you never know who you will run into or what you will end up doing, which makes Lake Tahoe such a great place to visit and, ultimately, live in!
