Great news for some home owners in the Lake Tahoe basin! Lake Valley and Meeks Bay fire protection districts have money from a grant to replace wood roofs in their jurisdictions.
The Hazardous Wood Roof Replacement Grant program is designed to encourage homeowners with hazardous wood roofs to replace them with a full Class A Assembly, non-combustible, non-wood roof.
Knowing that in the event of wildfires, and the accompanying ember shower, a home’s roof is the most vulnerable aspect of your structure. Having a non-combustible roof greatly increases your home’s survivability in the event of wildfire, or even a neighboring structure fire.
This grant program will provide eligible, participating homeowners with a 70 percent reimbursement (up to $6,000) for the costs of replacing an eligible wood roof.
(This grant program is NOT retroactive for previously replaced wood roofs. USFS cabins are NOT eligible. Commercial properties are NOT eligible.)
Due to the informational requirements of the Hazardous Wood Roof Replacement Grant, the program is being broken into two phases, the Phase 1 process (closes December 2012) and the (phase 2) Implementation Phase (which begins following approval of eligible homes, anticipating Spring 2013).
The Phase 1 process of the Hazardous Wood Roof Replacement Grant is a data collection Scope of Work. Lake Valley Fire Protection District will be creating a database of all interested wood roof homes. The database is required to have the following information and attachments in order for FEMA to determine a home’s eligibility for participation in the Implementation Phase.
- Completed program Phase 1 – Participation Agreement
- Year built date for wood roof home
- Latitude/longitude coordinates (will be collected by grant personnel)
- Up to 12 specific photographs documenting the current wood roof and the home’s surroundings (photographs must be taken by grant personnel)
- Date of compliance for the home’s defensible space (PRC 4291) with a copy of the current defensible space inspection form showing compliance
If, at the close of Phase 1, your home is determined to be ELIGIBLE for participation and YOU CHOOSE to continue your participation in the grant program’s Implementation Phase, you will be required to provide (prior to receiving your reimbursement):
- Completed program Implementation – Participation Agreement
- Minimum of 3 (three) Contractor Bid Sheets, to be completed by contractors
- Signed copy of Notice to Proceed, issued by the Grant Manager
- Verification of payment to the contractor, with copy of PAID invoice
- Copy of El Dorado County Building Permit to reroof
- Copy of Verification of Completion / Final Sign-Off of the reroof
